Cill Rialaig live/work Cottages (inside and out)

So, I do believe this will be my last post of Cill Rialaig stuff. It may seem a little silly, but these photos are just a glimpse at the hundreds of photos  I have from my time there and traveling around Kerry.

More importantly, I wanted to post these base images of the cottages, because there is little information on Cill Rialaig Artist Residency on the web. In an effort to continue with my “disclosure” on artist opportunities, I wanted to give you an idea of the facilities and living situation.

For an application and contact details on the residency see: Cill Railiag Project Application

View from the lofted bed (living area with workspace at the far end)

Lane up the mountain from Cill Rialaig-very little passing traffic, with only a handful of houses existing beyond this area

View from Loft- live area

Main floor from Kitchen area

night view from cottage, looking over neighboring cottage that has not been refurbished

slight view of loft- left door to the kitchen, right to the bathroom. Very simple-very efficient layout!

the awesome stairs up to the bed. since it is a steep incline to preserve space, the design of each steps saves spaces

obviously-the bed. the window faces the sea.

View of my cottage and lane down to the town of Ballinskelligs at sunset

bike shed- there are 2 bikes that artist can borrow

work area has glass ceiling, the light was great. Fuel stove for the very cold February nights

There are 6 cottages at Cill Rialaig, that are alloted to visual artist, musicians, and writers anywhere from 1 week to 1 month (maybe longer-you could try). In addition to the cottages there is a community house that has a small library and serves as a gathering place.

Your work is beautiful! I was investigating the Burren School of Art, artist residency and followed it to Cill Rialaig. I painted on the Beara in June and would like to pursue a residency for next year. I can’t find out how to apply to the Cill Rialaig residency. Can you direct me to the site, or give me contact info?
    Thank-you so much,
    Sue Gilkey

    Thanks Sue,

I know finding contact info on how to apply can be difficult and there is no website for easy access.

I have posted an attachment containing the application form and contact details just above the images in this blog post.

    All the best- Erin

I do not have any images of the bathroom or kitchen, they are the two doors that flank the back wall where I have cloths and bags hanging up.

Both are small but completely adequate; kitchen has all the cooking supplies you would need plus a functioning cooker, and the bathroom has a consistent HOT water, electric shower. Can’t ask for much more then that.

    • jeanne Says:

yes, well, i could ask for a bath to soak in, and seaweed to put in it, but i’m not going to be greedy. simply being there for a few weeks is good enough. thanks again for all your information. i’ll post a photo of the bath and kitchen when i get back from my turn. but i’ll be in a different cottage, and i don’t really think they’re all alike inside…

I came across your blog this evening trying to find out more about Cill Rialig – i am going there for a couple of weeks at the end of April – so it was lovely to get that inside view of the cottage and to know what to expect – am very excited!!

Did you have a productive time ? I can imagine that 2 weeks will not be long enough!
    Best wishes
    Penny

    • erintreacy Says:

I am glad you have found the information useful. I was there for 3 1/2 weeks and had a very productive time. Though I went for some walks and bike rides, tea with others there, I spent most of my time in the cottage working away. I hope you find it just as productive.

Thanks for the information! @Mira: How was your residency? I will go there at the end of Januar, also a cold winter-residency. Looking forward to it!

    Hey Erin,

thanks for all the Cill Riallaig info, it certainly is hard to find much on the web! I’m going to put in an application for a residency soon. Can you tell me, is there really no internet down there? At all? I was hoping to spend a few weeks down there, but it would be unhelpful to be out of contact for so long! Is there even a mobile phone signal that I could use…?

    Cheers,
    Peter

    • erintreacy Says:

      Hi Peter,
When I was there in 2010, there really was no internet. There is a little cafe at the beach in Ballinskelligs that has internet access, though I must say that when I tried to use it the signal was not that great. The cafe is open different times throughout the year and is a nice walk/bike ride from the residency. If you have a car, there is a library with internet access in Caherciveen, which is about a 10 minute drive. best Erin
